With the push for zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) becoming more prominent than ever, Québec has taken the initiative by introducing several new rules and regulations to help promote the adoption of zero-emission vehicles. In this blog post, we dive deeper into the new initiatives that have already helped residents get around 97,000 electric cars on the road with over 6,500 public charging stations.
Favourable legislation
Québec’s move to make a more environmentally-friendly future is already in full swing. The government has instituted a rebate program to purchase new EVs, established charging infrastructure requirements for new and existing buildings, and introduced regulations requiring ZEVs for government fleets. These policies are helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote innovation in the transportation sector.
Québec’s rebate program is one of the most generous in North America. Eligible buyers can receive up to $14,000 for the purchase of a new ZEV. In addition, there are reimbursements available for installing home charging stations and purchasing electric vehicles used for car-sharing.
The province has also put in place new and existing buildings to have charging infrastructure for EVs with the new Québec’s Roulez vert program, which increases the number of public charging stations and makes it easier for people to charge their vehicles at home or work. The province’s regulations requiring ZEVs for government fleets are also helping to reduce emissions and promote the use of electric cars.
Québec’s ambitious targets
Québec’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions were 80.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) in 2018. To meet its targets to reduce emissions below 1990 levels, the province has established goals that have the potential to make the province carbon neutral by 2050 and see a 37.5% reduction in emissions by 2030.
Québec’s primary goal is to have 1.5 million ZEVs on the road by 2030. This would reduce emissions by 16 megatonnes per year – the equivalent of taking around three million cars off the road! In addition to this, Québec seeks to have 100% of government vehicles electrified by 2030 and zero sales by gas-powered cars in 2035.
Lomiko: aiding the green revolution by supplying the critical minerals needed for ZEVs
Lomiko Metals has a new purpose and plan in the world of alternative energy. Lomiko is an organization with a mission: to create a world of abundant renewable energy solutions using Canadian and Quebec critical minerals in North America. We aim to build a sustainable future for Canada by increasing the critical minerals workforce, becoming a valued partner in the electric vehicle and green energy revolutions, and supplying needed resources to help meet global demands.
Lomiko is actively developing two main projects in the province of Quebec: La Loutre, which is held 100% by Lomiko and is being explored for high-grade large flake graphite, and Bourier, which has been optioned by Lomiko and is being explored for lithium. Both graphite and lithium are essential to supply North America’s rapidly expanding electric battery and green energy industries.
